Discover Our Story
Our Founding Director, Martha Tellez, was born in Mexico and had always been motivated to help disadvantaged children as she was not being able to have children of her own. Driven by a desire to help improves the lives of young people, Martha spent considerable time visiting and building relationships with various children’s homes.
In 2009, Martha returned to Morelia, Mexico where she had spent her schooling years and had the opportunity to visit La Casa de Jesus para la Proteccion de la Nina, an orphanage for girls.
Inspired by their work, Martha became a benefactor for one of the girls, but wanted to develop a programme that would have a wider effect on more than just one child.
Martha became a member of “With One Voice” Sydney Community choir in 2016 which fostered the development of her idea for I Have a Voice Orphans Choir ®. She experienced instant connection through the healing power of music, along with increased joy, self-expression, confidence and a sense of freedom.
The successes of her idea have already been felt in various Orphanages in Morelia, Mexico. Their participation in the choir has promoted self-worth and confidence in children with very disadvantaged situations, it has helped promote a sense of family, developed strong friendships and foster community.
Furthermore, Martha hopes that her program continues to provide an opportunity for children to express themselves; accomplish challenging skills; teamwork; discipline and a willingness to be listen to and follow complex instructions.
Most importantly, it is to bring the joy of learning and growing into their lives through music. The beauty being that you don’t need any skill or instrument to sing…just a voice.
